“Therapeutic Day On The Farm, Or Was It?”

Sun was shining brightly in the sky, there was a gentle breeze and the minibus was free, all good for a day out.

You’ve just got to take advantage of these days when you can and here at Skills Tank, we love to.  Packed lunches ready, coats in case the weather changes, first aid kit and all the usual paraphernalia you need to take when taking a group of adults 16+ with learning difficulties/disabilities out for the day.

Today’s destination, Sandwell Park Farm.

Sandwell Park Farm is a fully restored working Victorian farm. Grazing meadows, a traditional farmyard, walled kitchen gardens, Grade II listed buildings, a small museum and an award-winning tea room provide for a lovely day out and it has wheelchair access.

There are rare breeds to learn about, animals to feed, pet and watch. Lovely gardens which make a great backdrop for a picnic and a maze.  Oh, a maze, don’t worry no one got lost well no students!

Yes, there is lots of excitement and energy when we get there that’s why we head for the animal area first. Our students watch the animals so carefully, there’s this incredible connection, most of the time, and they quickly become relaxed, fascinated and calm. The students from Pheasey love going there.

The great detail they observe isn’t always apparent at first, days, sometimes weeks later in conversation, little things come out often accompanied with big beaming smiling faces.

Skills Tank is all about living and learning for a brighter future and these trips certainly help to cement friendships, bring out the caring helping nature that’s within the students and improve their communication skills whilst reducing their fear of being out in the community.

If you care for an adult 16+ who has moderate to severe learning difficulties/disabilities, autism, behavior that challenges and you’d like to see a positive change in them then come and look at what Skills Tank is doing.  It’s easy to do, just call Glenys or Wayne on 0121 308 6555 or visit www.skillstank.co.uk and request an information pack.
