And What A High Tea It Proved To Be!

When things conspire against you, you come up with another plan, don’t you?

If you’re a Skills Tank student with a ‘never say die’ attitude and have a Learning Mentor who wants to see you achieve achieve achieve then if plan A doesn’t come together you sit down as a team and work out plan B – with a bit of guidance of course.

That’s what happened in early September, yes a ‘really spooky disco’, Karaoke and a 10-course super supper where some of the ideas put forward by the Skills Tank students but after some discussion everyone excitedly settled on a ‘Tea Party’.

A date was set, a list of actions was agreed, permission was sought and hey presto if like magic this incredible journey began.

Now you may be asking; why would you do this?

The answer is; it’s all about learning through practical experiences.

And the learning comes in many shapes and sizes dependant on what challenges you and with a group of adults with learning difficulties/disabilities, autism, mental health and behaviours that challenge, the learning is varied but at its core is self-belief, self-esteem and confidence.

Surrounding that is;

  • communication skills
  • problem solving
  • working safely
  • working as a team
  • supporting one another
  • creating and working to an action plan
  • working through behaviours
  • following instructions
  • being in the community

The result was phenomenal, even Gordon Ramsey would have been impressed, possibly speechless okay that’s stretching it a bit but take my word for it, well look at the collage of pictures and you see it was a truly fantastic accomplishment – the students loved it, they did an amazing job and for the mums and dads utter joy, sprinkled with surprise and few tears.
